Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Selection While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad selection update

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has named captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the fall internationals, however Joe McCarthy misses out.

Doris, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are not included because of injury, and full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the summer tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new member in the 34-player group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says new Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "reserves".

After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous meeting, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test victories over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches so far and played in the second string's defeat by the English in Bristol earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a cap.

Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, while experienced Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris if the captain does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
